Swim Team's Finish Fourth in Season Opener

The North Central College men's and women's swimming teams both finished fourth at the season-opening Halloween Invitational hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University at the Fort Natatorium.

Kelsey Tumpane and Ariel Sievers highlighted the Cardinal efforts on the women's side, each turning in a third place finish. Tumpane placed third in the 200 yard butterfly, clocking a 2:34.20 while also recording a fifth place finish in the 500 yard freestyle (6:09.07) and a sixth place showing in the 200 yard backstroke (2:36.53). Sievers swam a 3:04.15 in the 200 yard breaststroke, finishing third.

In the relays, a team of Tumpane, Sievers and Katie Kruse recorded a third place finish in the 300 yard backstroke relay, clocking a 3:35.81 while the trio combined with Madeline Moton to place third in the 500 yard free relay in 5:12.06.

Ben Fewkes was the lone Cardinal competitor for the men's team, competing in four events in his collegiate debut. Fewkes recorded his highest finish of the day in the 200 yard backstroke, finishing third in 2:20.36. The freshman tallied a pair of fourth place finishes in the 100 yard free (54.38) and the 500 yard free (5:38.42) while placing sixth in the 200 yard free (2:03.34).

Host Illinois Wesleyan captured the team title in both the men's and women's competitions. The Titan women racked up 95 points while the men accumulated 98 points. Augustana College finished runner-up in both genders while the Cardinals finished fourth. The North Central women tallied 26 points while the men mustered six points in the team standings.

The Cardinals take next weekend off before returning to the pool on November 6 at the two-day University of Chicago Invitational.
