Cardinals Soar to Eagle Invite Victory

LISLE, Ill. (Oct. 9, 2009) -
Despite not sending its full squad, the North Central College men's cross country team was still able to claim victory on Friday, taking first place in the 18-team Benedictine University Eagle Invitational at Lisle Community Park.

Despite Marian University placing two of its competitors among the top three finishers, the Cardinals emerged victorious by placing their first five finishers in the top 17 overall. North Central finished with 46 points, while the Knights wound up second with 53.

Marian's Kyle Murray claimed first place overall, covering the 8,000-meter (five-mile) course in 26 minutes, 33.59 seconds. Emilio Saraga paced the Cardinals, finishing fourth overall in 26:52.15. North Central's Michael Matuszak also cracked the top 10, placing sixth in 27:07.72.

Daniel Kerley and Richard McNichols placed 11th (27:13.14) and 12th (27:13.64), respectively, and Charles Dundy rounded out the Cardinals'  scoring by placing 17th in 27:21.59.

Now the winner of five invitationals this season, North Central travels to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for the Brooks Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 17.
