WINNECONE, Wis. (Nov. 14, 2009) – The North Central College women's cross country team put itself in position for a potential berth in the NCAA Division III National Championships on Saturday, posting a fifth-place finish in the 39-team Midwest Regional at Lake Breeze Golf Course.
The third-ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire claimed the top spot in the team standings, finishing with 52 points, while eighth-ranked Washington University (Mo.) was second with 72. The 11th-ranked University of Wisconsin-La Crosse was third with 98 points and the 15th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh placed fourth with 139 while North Central tallied 208 points to finish 29 points ahead of the University of Chicago.
UW-Oshkosh's Ayla Mitchell won the 6,000-meter (3.75-mile) race in 20 minutes, 51.6 seconds. North Central's first finishers were Lauren Hooks and Amanda Laesch, who placed 19th (22:22.4) and 20th (22:23.0).
Alicia Zimmerman crossed the line 37th (22:52.2), while Kate Lueders was 54th in 23:09.9 and Krista Cota closed out the Cardinals' scoring, finishing 79th in 23:35.9.
The Division III National Championships will be contested Saturday at Highland Hills Golf Course in Cleveland, Ohio. Qualifiers for the meet will be announced Sunday at 2 p.m. at ncaa.com.
