Cardinals Finish Sixth at Maroon Invite

The North Central College men's and women's swimming teams both finished sixth at the two-day Maroon Invitational hosted by the University of Chicago at the Ratner Athletics Center. Katie Kruse and Kelsey Tumpane highlighted the Cardinals' efforts, each turning in a pair of top five finishes.

Kruse finished third in the 200 yard freestyle, clocking a 2:05.02 in the preliminary heats before swimming a 2:05.85 in the finals. The freshman recorded a fourth place showing in the 500 yard freestyle (5:42.76) while also placing sixth in the 100 yard free (58.42). In the 400 yard individual medley, Tumpane clocked a 5:09.22 in the prelims before finishing in 5:10.84 in the finals to finish fifth overall. Tumpane would additionally record a fourth place finish in the 200 yard butterfly (2:27.75) and a sixth place showing in the 200 yard backstroke (2:28.45).

Kruse and Tumpane teamed up with Hannah Brock and Madeline Moton in the 200 medley relay, finishing fifth in 2:08.40.

Ben Fewkes was the lone North Central entrant on the men's side, competing in three events. Fewkes finished 11th in the 200 yard freestyle after shaving over four seconds off his previous best time this season, clocking a 1:58.79. Fewkes recorded two more 11th place finishes in the 100 yard butterfly (1:04.04) and the 100 yard free (54.08).

Host University of Chicago easily won the meet on both the men's and women's sides while North Central placed sixth in both genders. The Cardinal women amassed 176 points at the meet while the men tallied 18.

North Central returns to the pool next weekend, traveling to Rock Island, Ill. to face Augustana College in the team's first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin dual meet of the year.
