Dec. 12, 2009 -- Kelsey Tumpane recorded a pair of first place finishes as the North Central College men's and women's swimming teams hosted the North Central College Invitational at the Merner Field House Pool. The Cardinals finished second on the women's side while the men placed fourth.
Tumpane claimed the 200 yard individual medley title, winning by almost a three-second margin, recording a time of 2:23.65. Tumpane would later claim top individual honors in the 100 yard backstroke (1:08.90) while also finishing second in the 100 yard butterfly (1:05.07).
Katie Kruse placed third in the 200 yard freestyle (2:07.86), 500 yard freestyle (5:49.67) and the 100 yard breaststroke (1:20.95) while
Ashley Taylor and
Emily Schaub each tallied a fourth place finish. Taylor placed fourth in the 100 yard free in 1:04.28 while Schaub swam to a fourth place finish in the 100 yard fly (1:33.11).
In the relays, the Cardinals' squad of Tumpane, Kruse, Taylor and Schaub tallied a runner-up showing in the 200 yard free relay (1:59.87) while also placing fourth in the 200 yard medley relay.
On the men's side,
Ben Fewkes was the Cardinals lone competitor, competing in three events and recording a pair of third place finishes. Fewkes swam to a third place finish in both the 200 yard free (2:00.29) and the 200 yard individual medley (2:19.83) while placing fourth in the 100 yard free (54.25).
Wheaton College claimed the team title on both the men's and women's sides, scoring 80 and 91 points, respectively. The North Central women placed second, scoring 37 points to edge out Principia College (Ill.) by six points while the Cardinal men placed fourth with eight points.
North Central heads south to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. next week for its annual winter training trip, culminating in a dual meet against Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) on Saturday, December 19.
