Tumpane Paces Swimmers at Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. (Dec. 5, 2009) --
The North Central College men's and women's swimming team's returned to action after almost a month layoff, competing at the two-day Wheaton Invitational at the Chrouser Natatorium. Kelsey Tumpane highlighted the Cardinals' efforts, recording a pair of 11th place finishes.

Sending just a select number of swimmers the women's squad finished seventh, scoring 12 points.

Tumpane qualified for the finals in the 200 yard butterfly on Friday, clocking a 2:26.99 to finish 12th before improving one spot in the finals that night to 11th with a time of 2:23.24. On Saturday, Tumpane would place 11th in the 400 yard individual medley preliminary heats with a time of 5:12.24 before finishing 11th in the finals in 5:02.45.

Katie Kruse placed 19th in the 200 yard freestyle, swimming a 2:05.16 in the prelims before recording a season best time of 2:04.64 in the finals. Kruse also recorded a 24th place finish in the 500 yard free (5:40.66) and a 29th place showing in the 100 yard free (57.57). Samantha Lent placed 36th in the 50 yard free, swimming a season best time of 31.45 while Elizabeth Micheletti was two spots back in 38th (35.27).

Ben Fewkes was the lone Cardinal entrant on the men's side, competing in three events and notching two season best performances. The freshman placed 27th in the 100 yard butterfly, clocking a 1:04.78 while logging season best efforts in both the 100 yard free (53.10) and the 200 yard free (1:57.60).

The Cardinals return to the pool on Saturday, December 12, hosting the four-team North Central College Invitational at the Merner Field House Pool. Events are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
