WHEATON, Ill. (Feb. 21, 2009) - The North Central College men's and women's swimming teams placed seventh at the 2009 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships, held Thursday through Saturday at Wheaton College.
The men's squad finished with 157 points. Carthage College claimed the team championship with 1,035 points, bettering second-place Wheaton's total by more than 300 points. North Central's women scored 175 points to trail the seven-team field. Wheaton won the team championship, totaling 872 points.
Spearheading the Cardinals' men's team's efforts was Tyler Hsieh (Fr., Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central), who placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.16). Hsieh also finished seventh in the 50-yard freestyle (21.90).
The women's program was led by Stefani Masterton (So., Morton Grove, Ill./Niles West), who placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.69 and did the same in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:29.06. Both times were season bests for Masterton.
North Central's 400-yard freestyle relay quartet of Masterton, Heather Granzella (Sr., Salida, Colo./Colorado State Univ.), Ali Sanders (Fr., Springfield, Ill./Springfield Southeast), and Madeline Moton (Fr., Castle Rock, Colo./St. Mary's) placed third in 3:51.16, giving the Cardinals their best time this season in the event by nearly 20 seconds.
