HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (Mar. 24, 2009) – For the first time in its history, the North Central College men's golf team knocked off a Division I opponent on Tuesday, defeating Centenary College (La.) in match play at Diamante Country Club.
Due to inclement weather, the teams switched from the traditional stroke-play format to match play, and the Cardinals dominated from start to finish, prevailing, 6.5 to 0.5.
Winning in singles play for North Central were Matt Pierce by a 3 and 2 count, Brett Miko, who won, 2 and 1, and Matt Grennell and Brendan Chaves, each of whom finished 1 up. Jake Thompson halved his singles match.
Miko and Thompson also teamed up for a doubles win, as did Pierce and Grennell.
The Cardinals return to tournament play on Apr. 3-4, participating in the Illinois Wesleyan University Invitational. The event will be held at Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Ill.
