Cardinals claim two in Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. (Apr. 18, 2009)--
The North Central College men's tennis team rebounded from Monday's loss to Carthage College with a pair of 9-0 victories on Saturday, crushing Eureka College and Fontbonne University (Mo.) to improve to 11-6 on the season.

In the afternoon's first match against host-Eureka, Sam Sweeney and Matt Boguslawski earned the 8-1 victory in No. 1 doubles over Aaron Rapp and Patrick Howard while the No. 2 and No. 3 duos of Gabe Youel/Ben Youel and Josh Clay/Andrew McKinley each breezed past their opponents, both winning 8-0.

In singles, the Cardinals made quick work of the Red Devils, winning all 12 sets. Nick DeFalco made his debut at No. 6 singles, earning the 6-0, 6-0 win over Justin Hayse while at No. 3, Clay earned the 6-1, 6-0 victory. The Youel brothers netted wins at No. 4 and No. 5 with Gabe winning 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 and Ben winning 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5. Rounding out the Cardinal winners were Sweeney and Boguslawski at No. 1 and No. 2. Sweeney won his match 6-2, 6-4 over Rapp while Boguslawski earned the 7-5, 6-2 win over Howard.

The Cardinals continued their dominance in the matinee, easily blowing past the undermanned Griffins. In doubles, Sweeney and Boguslawski netted their 10th straight doubles victory, cruising to the 8-0 win over Stephen Werkeister and Peter Papulis to improve to 14-3 on the season. At No. 2 doubles Eric McKee and Clay netted the 8-1 win while at No. 3 the Youel brothers won by default.

In singles, Sweeney, Ben Youel and Gabe Youel each posted perfect 6-0, 6-0 victories over their opponents, playing in the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 spots, respectively. The win was Sweeney's seventh straight as he improves his season mark to a team-best 15-2. McKee earned the 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 while DeFalco netted his second victory of the day, downing Kenny Buergler 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. At No. 6 singles, Andrew McKinley picked up the victory by default.

North Central returns to the courts on Thursday, making the trek to Bloomington, Ill. to face College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival Illinois Wesleyan University with doubles matches slated to begin at 4:15 p.m.
