Sam Sweeney moved up one spot to 15th in singles in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's final installment of the Central Region rankings released today.
Sweeney compiled a team-best 21-2 record for the Cardinals playing at the No. 1 singles position, concluding the season on a 13-match win streak. The junior finished unblemished against College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foes, recording a 7-0 mark en route to All-Conference and CCIW Player of the Year accolades.
Sweeney is one of just three CCIW athletes ranked in the top 20, Carthage College's Jack Schiro is ranked 10th while Sammy Ramoni, also from Carthage, is ranked 20th. Sweeney and Schiro met just once during the season with Sweeney coming away with the 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory on April 13.
The Cardinals concluded the 2009 campaign with their best record this decade, compiling a 14-9 overall mark while finishing fifth in the CCIW with a 2-3 record.
