ELMHURST, Ill. (Sept. 4, 2009) -
The North Central College men's cross country team pulled back the curtain on the 2009 season Friday at the Elmhurst College Early Bird Invitational.

The top-ranked Cardinals made no contest of the 17-team meet, claiming the top six individual places en route to a perfect score of 15 points. Wheaton College placed second with 58 points, while a  team comprised of North Central freshmen placed third overall with 120.

Michael Spain claimed first place in the individual competition, covering the 6,000-meter (3.75-mile) course in 19:01. Kyle Brady followed five seconds later in second place, while Ryan Carrigan finished third (19:09), Nathaniel Hird was fourth (19:23) and Christopher Kane finished fifth (19:25). Joseph McAvoy led the Cardinals' freshman contingent, placing seventh in 19:27.

North Central travels to Peoria on Friday for the Bradley University Invitational.
