Men's Track Opens Indoor Season with Win

The 2010 indoor season began on a decidedly positive note for the North Central College men's track and field team on Saturday, as the Cardinals racked up 10 first-place finishes and four provisional national championship qualifiers in claiming the team title in the Private College Invitational at Carthage College.

The Cardinals finished with 251 1/6 points to easily outdistance second-place Carthage College's total of 135 5/6 points.

North Central's provisional qualifiers came in the pole vault and pentathlon, as Cardinals posted the top two finishes in both events. Peter Geraghty claimed first place in the pole vault with a clearance of 16'0", while John Wood, an All-American in the indoor pole vault last season, placed second with a height of 15'5 3/4". North Central claimed the top five finishers in the pole vault.

The Cardinals also went 1-2 in the pentathlon, as Matthew Borchardt won with a total of 3,447 points and Joe Schneiderbauer finished second with 3,420. Both provisionally qualified for the indoor national championships.

Daniel Benton turned in a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.56), while Jacob Austin finished first in the 800-meter run (1:59.86), Ryan Carrigan (8:43.72) and Alexander Knobloch (8:47.51) finished 1-2 in the 3,000-meter run, and Daniel Kerley won the 5,000-meter run (15:35.35) to lead a 1-2-3-4 finish that also included Joseph McAvoy (15:36.99), Kelvin Guilbault (16:22.02) and Andrew Mueller (16:37.78).

The Cardinals placed first in the 4x200 (1:35.49) and distance medley (10:25.02) relays, Zachariah Heerspink won the high jump (6'5 1/2"), and Robert Kapustka won the shot put (47'1").

North Central hosts its first indoor meet at the new Al B. Carius Track on Friday, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
