Men's Track & Field Prevails in Home Opener

The North Central College men's track and field team held its first competition in its new indoor home Friday evening, placing first out of four teams in the First Meet Ever Invitational at Al B. Carius Track.

The second-ranked Cardinals won 13 of 16 events to finish with a team score of 217 points. The University of Dubuque placed second (93), folllowed by the University of Illinois-Chicago (88) and Benedictine University (69).

North Central had three individuals place first in multiple events, including triple winner Daniel Benton, who won the 200 (22.58) and 400-meter dashes (49.46)  and teamed with Jonathan Caron, Jon Biancardi and Scott Foley to win the 4-by-400-meter relay (3:24.58). Benton's time in the 400 was a provisional qualifying mark for the indoor national championships.

Also winning a pair of events was Nicholas Kane, who turned in a victory in the 800 (1:59.0) and ran with Jordan Kremer, Jonathon Kaufmann and Josh Garrett on the winning distance medley relay team (10:47.16). Robert Kapustka swept the throwing events, winning the 35-pound weight throw (50'7 1/4") as well as the shot put, where he provisionally qualified for the indoor nationals with a distance of 52'8".

Jake Winder cleared 16'4 3/4" to win the pole vault and also provisionally qualify for the championships. Others placing first in their respective events were Kyle Haste in the long jump (22'2 1/2"), Zachariah Heerspink in the high jump (6'3 1/2"), Michael Matuszak in the 5,000-meter run (15:32.41), Alexander Knobloch in the mile run (4:24.74) and Kyle Brady in the 3,000-meter run (8:22.75).

As Friday's meet was the first in the new venue, each of the first-place finishers is the current owner of a facility-record performance.

North Central will host the NCC Triangular Meet on Friday, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
