CHICAGO (Feb. 13, 2010) - The North Central College men's track and field team posted its fourth win in five indoor meets during the 2010 season on Saturday, overpowering a 17-team field and winning the Chicagoland Championships at the University of Chicago's Henry Crown Field House.
Winning four events, the Cardinals totaled 187.5 points to make no contest of the team competition. Chicago placed a distant second with 111.
Three of North Central's victories came in running events, as Daniel Benton placed first in the 400-meter dash in a time of 50.23 seconds,
Jon Biancardi hit the finish line in 1:57.55 to win the 800-meter run and
Matthew Brinkmeier picked up the win in the mile run (4:23.10).
The Cardinals' lone victory in the field events came from Zachariah Heerspink, who won the high jump with a season-best leap of 6 feet, 8 1/4 inches. The clearance provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships.
North Central got two other provisional qualifying marks in the field events by
Matthew Borchardt, who placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 46'5", and
Robert Kapustka, who placed second in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 57'9". Kapustka improved the mark he established earlier this season.
Kaputska also placed second in the shot put (50'8 1/4"), as did
Joe Schneiderbauer in the high jump (6'3 1/4"),
Michael Spain in the 3,000-meter run (8:44.14), and the 4x200 (1:32.17), 4x400 (3:24.60) and distance medley relays (10:10.52).
The Cardinals return home to host the Cardinal Classic at Al B. Carius Track on Saturday.
