Feb. 20, 2010 - The North Central College men's track and field team kept its perfect record at Al B. Carius Track intact on Saturday, topping an eight-team field in the inaugural Cardinal Classic.

Winning six events, the third-ranked Cardinals piled up 245.5 points, putting them well ahead of runner-up Washington University (Mo.), which finished with 93.

North Central swept the top five spots in the pole vault, led by Jake Winder. The defending Division III indoor national championship improved his automatic qualifying mark for this year's championships with a clearance of 17 feet, 3/4 inch. John Wood and Peter Geraghty tied for second place, each clearing 15'10", while Steven Stack and Thomas Stacey tied for fourth place (15'3 1/4").

Jacob Austin earned a provisional national qualifying mark in the 800-meter run, finishing in 1:54.24. Austin led teammates Jonathan Biancardi and Nicholas Kane across the finish line in second (1:56.09) and third place (1:56.64), respectively.

The Cardinals also swept the top three positions in the mile. Ryan Carrigan led the way, placing first in 4:16.51, while Kyle Brady came in second (4:17.89) and Alexander Knobloch finished third (4:18.14).

Zachariah Heerspink took first place in the high jump and Matthew Borchardt finished second, each clearing 6'4 1/4", while Richard Kingery got the win in the 35-pound weight throw (45'5 1/4"). The Cardinals' distance medley relay team of Matthew Brinkmeier, Jonatthan Caron, Jordan Kremer and Joseph McAvoy won in 10:21.17, establishing a new North Central freshman record.

In his first attempt at the 5,000-meter distance this season, Michael Spain placed second and provisionally qualified for the national championships with a time of 14:51.02.
