WHITEWATER, Wis. (Feb. 5, 2010) - The North Central College men's track and field team hit the road for the first time in three weeks on Friday, claiming a second-place finish in the eight-team Squig Converse Invitational at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The second-ranked Cardinals picked up four first-place finishes and seven qualifying marks for the national championships to lead the way to a 134-point outing, which placed second only to the No. 1-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's score of 170.
North Central got an automatic qualifying mark from
Kyle Brady, who won the 5,000-meter run in 14:28.36. Brady was an NCAA Division III All-American at the same distance a year ago. Also winning their events with provisional qualifying marks were Daniel Benton in the 400-meter dash, who clocked a provisional national qualifying time of 49.53 seconds, and
Jake Winder, won the pole vault wiith a clearance of 16 feet, 6 3/4 inches. The Cardinals' 4-by-200-meter relay team placed first as well (1:32.72).
The Cardinals got three other provisional marks in the pole vault, as
Peter Geraghty placed second (16'0 3/4"),
John Wood finished third (15'7") and
Steven Stack was fourth (15'7").
Robert Kapustka also turned in a provisional qualifying mark in the shot put, recording a distance of 51'0" to finish third.
North Central travels to the University of Chicago on Saturday, Feb. 13, for the Chicagoland Indoor Championships.
