WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (Mar. 22, 2010) - The North Central College baseball team extended its winning streak to four games on Monday, sweeping both ends of a double header against D'Youville College (N.Y.), 11-0 and 7-3.
The Cardinals are now 6-1 this season, including a 4-1 mark on their Spring Break schedule.
North Central broke a scoreless tie in the first game with a three-run third inning. With runners on first and third,
Matt Abraham doubled to bring home the first run of the game, and
Joe Turek followed with a two-run single.
The Cardinals tacked on two runs in the fifth, as
Peter Romanello scored on an error and Abraham singled home another run. Abraham also kicked off a six-run sixth inning with an RBI single, as
Nick Robinson scored on an error on the same play.
Michael Corrigan followed with a two-run double before Turek capped off the scoring with a two-run home run to right-center field.
Turek went 3 for 3 at the plate for the Cardinals, while Abraham was 3 for 4 and
Dan Scott went 2 for 4.
Micah Yarbrough recorded a complete-game shutout of the Spartans, scattering six hits while striking out three and walking none in seven innings.
North Central also struck first in the second game of the double header, as Scott drew a walk and stole second base in the first inning before scoring on Abraham's single. Robinson's double in the third drove in two runs and gave the Cardinals a 3-0 advantage, though D'Youville countered with two runs in the third to narrow the gap to 3-2.
The Cardinals added a run in the fourth, as Scott reached on a fielder's choice and stole second before scoring on Abraham's double. North Central put the game away with a three-run seventh inning, as
Steve Hlavac singled with the bases loaded to drive home a run,
Andrew Wulbecker scored on an error and Romanello drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Abraham went 3 for 3 at the plate in the nightcap, while
Matt Burke was 2 for 3.
Caleb Henderson pitched the first 4 1/3 innings and got the win (1-0), allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four and walking two.
The Cardinals will look to close out their Spring Break schedule with a fifth straight win on Wednesday, as they take on Hamilton College (N.Y.) at 10 a.m. ET.
