SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Mar. 27, 2010)-- Cory Schillerstrom and
Abigail Conover each finished unbeaten in singles as the North Central College women's tennis team returned to the courts after a month hiatus, competing at the two-day Hack Kellner Invitational hosted by the University of Illinois-Springfield.
At No. 1 singles, Schillerstrom finished the weekend undefeated, needing three sets to retire UI-Springfield's Priyanka Deo, 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 while breezing past Cecilia Sanchez of Lewis & Clark Community College (Ill.), 6-1, 6-1. In doubles, the sophomore and her partner
Alicia DeGrado, split a pair of matches, defeating Lewis & Clark's top squad, 8-6, while falling 8-5 to the host Prairie Stars' Deo and Thiyumi Abeysinghe.
Conover completed a spotless weekend in No. 3 singles, blanking the Trailblazer's K.T. Mabery, 6-0, 6-0, also edging UI-Springfield's Rosanna Ramilo, 6-1, 6-7, 10-5. In doubles, Conover and
Jessica Ignarski finished 1-1 in the No. 2 position, downing Lewis & Clark's Katie McGery and Jessica Moss, 8-3, while ending up on the wrong side of the same score against UI-Springfield's Ramilo and Jane Brown.
DeGrado, Ignarski,
Christina Madrigal and
Katie Hatch all finished 1-1 in singles, playing in the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 positions, respectively. All four picked up victories over competitors from Lewis & Clark while stumbling against opponents from the Division II Prairie Stars.
No team scores were kept at the three-team invitational.
The Cardinals (11-5) return to the courts on Saturday, April 17, facing off against Division I Western Illinois University in a dual match in Macomb, Ill.
