Cardinals Claim Three of Four Regional Awards

Mar. 10, 2010-- The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its 2010 Men's Indoor Track & Field Midwest Region Award winners on Wednesday with three of the four award winners hailing from North Central College. Al Carius was honored as the Head Coach of the Year, Tim Winder was named Assistant Coach of the Year while Jake Winder was selected as the Field Athlete of the Year.

Carius, now in his 44th year as head coach, wins his second consecutive Midwest Region Coach of the Year Award after guiding the Cardinals to their 10th straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Indoor Championship this February. Under his watch, 17 provisional or automatic qualifying marks were hit during the indoor season across 11 different events. North Central leads all Division III teams with 12 entries to the 2010 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships and currently sit atop the USTFCCCA National Team Rankings.

Pole vault coach Tim Winder wins the Assistant Coach of the Year honor after four men's vaulters (five total) qualified for the 2010 Indoor Championships. Winder, now in his 16th year as coach at North Central, has coached six national champions in the event, including the 2009 indoor men's and women's national champions.

Tim's son Jake wins Field Athlete of the Year honors for the second consecutive season after posting the highest mark in Division III in the pole vault. Winder, the 2009 indoor national champion, cleared 17 feet 4 1/2 inches on Feb. 26 at the CCIW Championships, establishing a new conference record en route to his second straight conference crown. The senior is currently undefeated this season against collegiate competition.

All three award winners will be down in Greencastle, Ind. on Friday and Saturday for the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships at the James A. Hollensteiner Track. Action begins at 9 a.m. (Eastern Time) on both days.
