WHEATON, Ill. (Apr. 18, 2010) -
Seven first-place finishes and 10 provisional national qualifying marks headlined another dominant performance by the North Central College men's track and field team, as the Cardinals stormed away from the field at the Wheaton College Twilight Invitational on Saturday.

The third-ranked Cardinals totaled 243 points in the meet, 86 more than runner-up Central College (Iowa) and more than double the score of any other team in the competition.

North Central put its long-held depth in the distance events on full display in the 5,000-meter run, as the Cardinals had the first six runners across the line, each of whom met the provisional qualifying standard. Indoor national champion Kyle Brady won the event in 14:29.05, while Michael Spain came in second (14:31.28), followed by Ryan Carrigan (14:39.03), Alexander Knobloch (14:40.15), Christopher Kane (14:42.79) and Sean Carlson (14:43.00).

The Cardinals swept the top three spots in the pole vault, as Jake Winder won the event with a clearance of 15 feet, 11 inches and Steven Stack and John Wood tied for second (15'5").

Daniel Benton claimed first place in the 200-meter dash (21.69), provisionally qualifying for the national championships, and teamed with Jon Howard, Jonathan Caron and Dayton Henriksen to win the 4x400-meter relay (3:17.57). Howard added a first-place effort in the 400 hurdles (55.59) with James Hoffman placing second (55.84).

Other first-place finishes for North Central came from Jacob Austin in the 1,500-meter run (3:57.68), Matthew Borchardt in the high jump (6'4 3/4") and Kyle Haste in the long jump (21'5 1/4"). Yonatan Mascote placed second in the 3,000-meter run (8:52.37), as did Robert Kapustka in the shot put (47'10 1/2") and Joe Schneiderbauer in the javelin throw (160'2").

The Cardinals will send 22 athletes to the Drake Relays next weekend, while the rest of the squad will travel to the Concordia University (Ill.) Cougar Invitational.
