Men's Track Tallies Eight Qualifiers at Twilight

LISLE, Ill. (Apr. 30, 2010)-- Competing in one final tune-up before next weekend's College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships, the North Central College men's track and field squad collected eight provisional qualifying performances Friday night at the Benedictine University Twilight Invitational.

The Cardinals put together a dominating performance in the middle sprints, claiming the top three finishers in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Dan Benton was a dual-winner, lowering his provisional qualifying time in the 400, clocking a 48.14 to win the event before clocking a season-best and provisional qualifying time of 21.58 in the 200. Jon Caron finished second in the 400 (49.12) before recording a third-place finish in the 200 (21.98). Dayton Henriksen placed runner-up in the 200 (21.78) while Cam Culpepper finished third in the 400 (49.49).

North Central secured the top four spots in the pole vault with John Wood winning the event. Wood cleared 16 feet 5 1/4 inches, improving his provisional qualifying mark while his teammates Steven Stack, Josh Winder and Thomas Stacey finished in a three-way tie for second after all clearing a provisional qualifying height of 15' 5".

Matt Borchardt added his name to the national list in the high jump, winning the event with a jump of 6' 8 3/4" with Andrew Carlson placing third (6' 4 3/4"). Borchardt additionally finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 45' 4 1/2".

Jacob Austin raced to the victory in the 1,500-meters, clocking a provisional qualifying effort of 3:53.51 with Ryan Carrigan finishing close behind in third (3:56.69).

Also recording runner-up finishes were James Hoffman in the 400-meter hurdles (55.50) and the 4x100-meter relay squad (43.20). Third place finishers included Delaney Fluker in the 110-meter hurdles (15.32), Jon Howard in the 400-meter hurdles (56.09), Sean Carlson in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:29.21), Zach Heerspink in the long jump (21' 6 3/4") and Robert Champion in the hammer throw (162' 3").

No team scores were kept at the meet which served as the Cardinals final tune-up before next weekend's CCIW Championships hosted by Wheaton College. The two-day event begins on Friday at 10 a.m. inside McCully Stadium.
