CHICAGO (May 4, 2010) -
An early 5-1 deficit proved to be a mere speedbump for the North Central College baseball team on Tuesday, as the Cardinals scored 10 unanswered runs and completed a home-and-home sweep of the University of Chicago with an 11-5 victory at J. Kyle Anderson Field.

North Central (29-5) has now assured itself of the program's highest single-season victory total since 1991, when the Cardinals went 35-12 to establish the current school record for wins.

The Maroons (16-15) jumped in front with a three-run first inning, taking full advantage of two walks and two wild pitches. North Central got on the board in the second inning when Steve Hlavac hit his second home run in four days, a solo shot to left field. Chicago, however, made use of a pair of Cardinal errors to score two more runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The visitors wasted little time eating into their deficit, crossing the plate three times in the third inning as Nick Robinson delivered an RBI single and Michael Corrigan added a two-run base hit. North Central tied the game in the fourth when Hlavac reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Wulbecker.

The Cardinals put the game away with a six-run avalanche in the fifth. Robinson led off with a single and later scored on an error, and Corrigan and Hlavac each turned in RBI singles before Corrigan scored on an error and Wulbecker drove in two runs with a base hit.

North Central kept any thoughts of a Maroon comeback at bay by permitting just two hits over the final five innings of play.

Hlavac and Corrigan each went 2 for 4 in the game, while Robinson and Dan Scott went 2 for 5. Aaron Kovac earned the victory on the mound (2-0), allowing just one hit and striking out four in five scoreless innings of relief.

The Cardinals close out their non-conference schedule on Wednesday, hosting Rockford College at 3 p.m.
