WHEATON, Ill. (May 8, 2010) - Despite first-place finishes in eight events, the North Central College men's track and field team was unable to stave off a charge from Augustana College, as the Cardinals were narrowly edged out for the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Outdoor Championship on Saturday.
In a hotly-contested two-team race that left all other competitors far behind, the Vikings posted a team total of 262 points, barely out of reach of the Cardinals' score of 260.
North Central had one double-winner in
Jacob Austin, who was voted the CCIW's Track Athlete of the Meet. Austin sprinted away from the field to win a tactical 1,500-meter run in 4 minutes, 2.72 seconds, then surged to a victory in the 800 meter run, hitting the finish line in 1:55.22.
Kyle Brady and
Michael Spain crossed the line first (30:54.02) and second (30:54.05), respectively, in Friday's 10,000-meter final, then paced the field in the 5,000-meter run on Saturday. Spain won the shorter event in 14:43.7, while Brady followed in 14:44.1 and
Sean Carlson made it a 1-2-3 sweep by finishing third in 14:55.3. Carlson also was a winner on Friday, placing first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:28.38), with
Christopher Kane coming in second (9:30.92).
Jonathan Caron turned in a hard-fought victory in the 400-meter dash, outleaning Augustana's Greg Patton at the finish line, as both were timed in 48.98 seconds.
Matthew Borchardt, who was voted the CCIW's Field Athlete of the Meet, won the high jump with a clearance of 6 feet, 5 1/2 inches. He also placed second in the long jump (22'11 3/4"), posting a provisional qualifying mark for the Division III Outdoor National Championships, and finished third in the triple jump (44'2 1/2").
Andrew Carlson placed second in the high jump with a leap of 6'4".
John Wood,
Thomas Stacey and
Steven Stack took the top three spots in the pole vault. Wood was declared the winner of the event as each cleared 15'5".
Second-place finishes also came from
Jon Howard in the 400-meter hurdles (54.40),
Joe Schneiderbauer in the decathlon (6,366), and the 4x100-meter relay team (42.61), while
Delaney Fluker placed third in the 110-meter hurdles (15.34) and
Robert Kapustka was third in the shot put (51'6 1/4"). Kapustka's effort provisionally qualified him for the outdoor national championships.
The Cardinals host the Dr. Keeler Invitational on Thursday and Friday.
