OAK BROOK, Ill. (Oct. 5-6, 2012) – The North Central College women's tennis team finished fifth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship hosted by Elmhurst College, Oct. 5-6 at the Oak Brook Park District.
The Cardinals (8-5, 2-4 CCIW) finished the weekend with 21 total team points to finish behind CCIW champion Wheaton College with 75 points while Augustana College, Carthage College, and Illinois Wesleyan University rounded out the top five.
Rebecca Ross posted the Cardinals best finish of the weekend, taking second place in No. 5 singles. In the opening round Ross defeated Elmhurst College's Brittany Kuehn, 6-0, 6-0, before downing Mariah Bardo of Augustana, 7-5, 6-0, in the semifinals. In the championship match, Wheaton's Julia Carey ended Ross' tournament downing the freshman, 6-2, 6-1.
At the No. 4 position,
Reynolds Cross defeated Elmhurst's Ragan Wilson, 6-3, 7-5, before succumbing to Aileen MacDonald, 6-1, 6-0, of Augustana in the semifinals. In the playback semifinals, Cross downed Carthage's Abbi Howell, 8-6, before defeating Alissa Goetz of Illinois Wesleyan in the third place match, 8-6.
In doubles play, the Cardinal combination of
Kassandra Bernardo and
Rebecca Ross finished with a fourth place finish at the No. 3 position. In the opening round, the duo cruised past Carthage's Holly Weber and Kirsten Peterson, 8-5, before falling in the semifinals, 8-4, to Erika Nelson and Lauren Schlabach of Wheaton. In the playback semifinals, Bernardo and Ross downed Ragan Wilson and Jennifer Guenther of Elmhurst, 8-3, before Weber and Peterson rebounded with a, 9-8 (7-2), victory in the third place match to end the Cardinals fall season.
