Nov. 20, 2012 – For the third time in four years, North Central College men's cross country coach
Al Carius has been selected as 2012 NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Carius claims the award after guiding the Cardinals to their
15th national championship on Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind., as the team sat in fifth place with just 1,000-meters remaining. Carius was also named the USTFCCCA National Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2011, while earning USTFCCCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year accolades in each of the last five seasons.
During the course of the season North Central won six meets, including the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships and the Notre Dame Invitational, as well as claiming its 39
th consecutive College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship.
Carius, a member of the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame, has won 15 national titles in cross country during his tenure at North Central along with seven national titles in track and field (five outdoor, two indoor) as the head coach, and three more (two indoor, one outdoor) as an associate head coach.
