MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Feb. 25, 2012)—The North Central College wrestling team will send two individuals to the national championships, after posting a seventh-place finish in the 15 team field at the NCAA Division III Regional Championships hosted by Augsburg College on Saturday.
The Cardinals posted a team score of 53 points on the day. Fourth ranked Augsburg College claimed the team championship amassing 172.5 points, eighth ranked St. John's University (Minn.) came in second with 110.5 points, and Elmhurst College rounded out the top three finishing with 108.5 team points.
Junior
Nathan Fitzenreider punched his third straight trip to the national meet at 125 pounds, as he made quick work of his first three opponents recording pins over Francisco Munoz of Knox College (2:29), Zach Binkard of Pacific University (2:50), and Concordia College's (Moorhead) Ben Presler (1:08).
In the championship match, Fitzenreider pulled out a hard fought victory defeating Augsburg's Mike Fuenffinger by decision, 3-2.
Entering the regional ranked fourth nationally at 141 pounds,
Andrew Zobac easily defeated Concordia's (Moorhead) Michael Holman by major decision, 13-2, and Juan Diaz of Lakeland College by technical fall, 15-0 to advance to the semi-finals. In the round of four, the senior made short work of Jake Denhof of Elmhurst, pinning him in 1:40.
In the championship match, Zobac was ousted by fifth ranked Will Ketter of Augsburg by decision, 3-2. With his second place finish, Zobac clinches his second trip to the national championships in as many years.
The Cardinals also received team points from
Joby Bodi, thanks to a fifth place finish from the senior.
