Jake Muszczynski's second hat trick of the season powered the North Central College men's soccer team past Fontbonne University, 3-0, in the championship game of the 2012 Sal Vaccaro Tournament Sunday night inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
The Cardinals (6-1-0) struck first as Muszczynski snuck past the Griffin (4-1-1) defense and found the back of the net off a pass from
Jake Johnson in the 12
th minute, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Just over 12 minutes later, Muszczynski struck again connecting on his team leading seventh goal of the season off a throw in by
Ryan Johnson to increase the Cardinal lead to 2-0 heading into the intermission.
In the 73
rd minute, Muszczynski let one rip from 25 yards out sneaking a laser past Griffin goalkeeper Ryan Essenpreis in the upper right corner of the goal, giving the Cardinals the decisive 3-0 lead.
North Central outshot Fontbonne by a 15-11 margin while the Cardinal defense held the Griffins to just two shots on goal.
Kyle DeRaedt started in goal for North Central while
John McWard took over in the second half recording two saves. Essenpreis stopped five shots on the night in the losing effort.
North Central travels to Chicago, Ill. to take the University of Chicago on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 2:30 p.m.
