CCIW Press Release
Nov. 4, 2013 - North Central College quarterback Spencer Stanek and defensive back Shane Dierking have been selected as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Football Players of the Week on offense and defense, respectively, for the week of Nov.. 2. The CCIW announced this week's selections on Monday.
The two seniors were honored for their roles in North Central's 46-17 victory at Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday, which kept the Cardinals (8-0, 5-0 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) unbeaten on the season and gave North Central sole possession of first place in the CCIW standings.
Stanek, the first CCIW player to receive four Player of the Week Awards since North Central linebacker Matt Wenger in 2008, threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns against the Titans. He established career highs for pass completions (32) and pass attempts (45), missing the Cardinals' single-game record for completions by just one. He has now thrown for multiple touchdown passes in seven straight games.
Dierking, a Player of the Week honoree for the first time this season and the third time in his career, led North Central with 11 tackles on Saturday. He recorded his team-leading sixth interception of the season in the fourth quarter to set up the Cardinals' final touchdown. With 14 career interceptions, Dierking is now just one short of the North Central career record.
North Central now has a total of seven CCIW Player of the Week Awards this season. Defenisve lineman John Focosi and kicker Nick Dace have also received the distinction this year.
The fourth-ranked Cardinals travel to face Wheaton College (7-1, 4-1 CCIW) on Saturday with a chance to clinch at least a share of their eighth straight CCIW championship.
Saturday's kickoff at McCully Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Links to live audio and in-game statistics can be accessed by clicking HERE.
