PLEASANT PRAIRIE, Wis. (Feb 16, 2014) —The North Central College swimming teams ended their 2013-2014 season at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships this weekend. The men ended in seventh with 113 overall points while the women secured sixth place at 218.
"Since we have a small team we mainly care about growing as individuals," said head coach
Mark Broucek. "We care about progressing during the year in early meets so at the CCIW championships we are ready to compete."
Natalie Przybylski kicked off the events on Feb. 8, competing in the diving championships. She placed third in the women's one-meter dive with a score of 336.90 and earned herself All-CCIW Diver recognition.
On Thursday, the women started things back up in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing at 1:49.52 with swimmers
Victoria Lynn,
Lauren Gorski,
Destinee Ganious and
Kathleen Fultz. The men followed them in their relay with a time of 1:33.71 with
Neil Hummer,
Jacob Nesemeier,
Mitchell Wood and
Robb Showalter.
In the 400-yard medley relay,
Julie Albright, Ganious,
Loreli Patschke and
Mariana Cury grabbed fifth place with a time of 4:12.07. Albright went on to swim in the 200-yard individual medley for the women, placing 14
th with a time of 2:20.16.
The men secured seventh place in the 400-yard medley relay with swimmers Showalter, Wood, Hummer and Nesemeier at a time of 3:53.80.
On Friday, the women started back up in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing fifth place at 1:54.28 with Albright, Ganious, Patschke and Cury. Patschke went on to place 12
th in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:02.89.
Carolyn Masterton competed in the 200-yard freestyle tapping in at 2:05.79. Ganious and Fultz placed in the 100-yard breaststroke for the Cardinals. Ganious ended at 1:10.57 with Fultz right behind her at 1:16.30. Ganious also placed sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a final of 2:32.51 and was named All-CCIW for the high placements in the races.
"Ganious had a huge improvement from the first meet to the last," said Broucek. "In the 200-yard breaststroke she struggled at first and at the CCIW championships she was our highest placed swimmer in that event."
In the 100-yard backstroke, Albright had a final time of 1:02.57 and Patschke finished at 1:03.32 with the women then ending the day in 800-yard freestyle relay with Cury, Masterton, Lynn and Gorski placing sixth at 8:35.87.
In the men's competitions, Showalter, Wood, Hummer and Nesemeier placed seventh in the 200-yard medley relay at 1:45.93. They also went on to achieve seventh with a time of 7:56.13 in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Hummer also competed in the 100-yard butterfly ending in 15
th place with a final time of 55.20.
In the last day of the championships on Saturday, Albright competed in the women's 200-yard backstroke and received a time of 2:15.55. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Ganious placed sixth for the Cardinals with a final time of 2:32.51. For the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Cardinals placed a time of 3:47.88 with team members Patschke, Cury, Albright and Masterton.
"I was pleased with the relays," said Broucek. "We were the smallest team there. It's easier for bigger teams to put a bunch of swimmers together for a relay. We put together quality relays."
For the men in the 400-yard freestyle relay, Nesemeier, Hummer, Wood and Showalter placed sixth with a final time of 3:24.37. Hummer then went on to grab ninth place in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:01.51.
"Next year we are going to place even higher," said Broucek after four swimmers finished 17
th, one place shy of scoring points and moving on. "None of those swimmers were seniors so it was a time for them to learn and be prepared for next season."
The CCIW Championships ended with Wheaton College taking home first place for men (861) and women (871).
