(Apr. 5, 2014) - As it did five times during the indoor season, the North Central College men's track and field team came out on top in its first competition of the 2014 outdoor schedule, winning five events and posting a sizable victory in the team standings at the Wheaton College Invitational on Saturday.
The 14th-ranked Cardinals compiled 239.50 points, well ahead of 15th-ranked Carthage College's runner-up total of 185. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside was a distant third with 92 points.
North Central's middle-distance and distance runners continued to contribute substantially to the team's effort.
Ryan Bartell and
Richard Ruske swept the top two spots in the 800-meter run, as Bartell won in one minute, 55.22 seconds and Ruske was a close second in 1:56.26.
Matt Muth added a win in the 1,500-meter run (4:01.27), while
Travis Morrison placed first in the 5,000-meter run (15:03.61) with
Zach Plank following in third (15:09.98).
Roger Klein and
Troy Kelleher hit the line second (29:55.54) and third (29:55.57), respectively, in the 10,000-meter run to establish new personal records and move into North Central's top 10 in the event. Kelleher knocked nearly a minute off of his lifetime best.
Derek Nelson won the javelin throw with a distance of 172 feet, five inches, as
Nick Fridrich finished third at 159'1".
Nick Foley added a first-place effort in the pole vault (14'1 1/4") with MIchael Koehne placing third (13'7 1/4").
Ryan Root and
Ken Hoffman finished second (9:30.01) and third (9:34.04), respectively, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and
Femi Oyewole and
Kyle Pembrook did the same in the high jump, as Oyewole cleared 6'7 1/2" and Pembrook cleared 6'5 1/2".
Also placing second were Nelson in the 400-meter hurdles (54.81),
Dan Lowry in the hammer throw (150'8"),
Abraham Oshipitan in the 200-meter dash (22.54),
Dionte Hackler in the 400-meter dash (49.56) and the 4-by-400-meter relay quartet of Nelson, Oshipitan, Hackler and
Zach Kirby (3:23.22).
Adam Lundquist finished third in the 110-meter hurdles (15.19).
The Cardinals will travel to Lewis University next weekend for the Chicagoland Outdoor Championships.
