Apr. 10, 2017 – Thirteen years ago in a parking lot, North Central College sophomore Tanner James began his lacrosse journey. Through the inspiration of his parents and friends that have encouraged and supported him along the way, James now holds a captain position on the College's inaugural team.

Throughout his lacrosse career, the Gurnee native has experienced great triumphs within the sport. He helped Warren Township High School to a state championship his senior year, a experience and confidence that has allowed him to take a leadership role on North Central's inaugural men's lacrosse team.

"You have to make sure you're staying on top of everything, making sure everyone's focused, and try to keep the balance," said James on his role as captain.

As the lone sophomore on the team, James is currently tied for the team lead in goals with 23. He scored a career-high four goals at Bethany College on Mar. 21 and in the program's historical first-ever College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) match-up against the University of Dubuque. He contributed four points in the inaugural win against Concordia University of Chicago on Feb. 22.

"We're ready to win," said James on the team's success thus far.

The team, though green, have the same goals in mind, especially the goal to make it to the CCIW tournament. "I think we can do it," said James.

It is the good friends, connections, and warm spring weather that really holds the foundation of James' passion for the sport. He attributes this to the support he has received from older guys and his friends that are always at his side on and off the field.

James loves that competitive rush you get when you beat someone you're not supposed to. This competitive atmosphere is something James would love to take off the field in joining North Central's debate team. Unfortunately, his current four class load and busy lacrosse schedule makes this too difficult of a commitment for the political science major to take on this term. James has gotten involved with the Republican's Club at North Central, where he can promote his passion for politics.

A transfer student from Beloit College, James followed in the footsteps of his parents, both being North Central alumni. "He's got a couple accolades from the school," said James on his father's college success. "I definitely want to have more than him by the time I leave!"

He was very excited to be a part of the inaugural team of men's lacrosse, starting at a wonderful new place that better fit him as a person, student, and athlete.

The Cardinals take on the Augustana College Vikings at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
