Dawn Schabacker was one of the College's greatest female athletes during arguably the most successful era for women's sports at North Central. A three-sport athlete, Schabacker excelled on the basketball and volleyball courts as well as the softball field. But, softball was her specialty. A standout pitcher, she played on a team that finished fourth in the nation during her senior year in addition to winning the Chicago Metro Conference championship.

The 1981 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American First Team selection is North Central's record holder for earned run average in a Career (1.34), strikeouts in a career (420), shutouts in a career (24) and earned run average in a single season (0.66 in 1983).

Schabacker was a member of the All-State Squad, averaging .75 and pitching 23 games. she holds a 2.03 run average and has struck out one-hundred and forty batters. She held an 11-5 record, and was a member of the North Central 19982-83 basketball team. the 1982-83 basketball team was the team to defeat Elizabethtown in Massachusetts, which lead them to win the 1983 NCAA DIII Women's basketball crown.

The game itself was aired on ESPN. The Cardinals, who won the Chicago Metro Conference Tournament, held a record of 26-6 and went on to host the Central Region and West Quarter final at North Central in Gregory Arena. The team's 44.5% shooting percentage still stands victorious as the women's basketball single record. The team was inducted into the IBCA Hall of Fame in 2016.

After graduating from the College with degrees in health and physical education, Schabacker took her first job at Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, Ill., where she still teaches and coaches. She received her master's degree in public health from Benedictine University in 1993 and a second master's degree in curriculum and development from National-Louis University in 2003.
