John Weigel emerges as one of the all-time bests in a program full of running standouts. A three-time All-American in cross country and eight-time All-American in track, Weigel was the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Cross Country Champion in 1995 with a time of 23:57.5. He also finished second in 1994 and 1993 and might have finished first in 1993 had the first-place finisher not been teammate Dan Mayer '94.

At the conference level, Weigel was two-time College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) champion (1994-95) while also finishing second in 1993 and eighth in 1992.

In track, Weigel excelled in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. He was National Champion in the 10,000 meters as a junior with a time of 29:52.68 and was also second in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships and third at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He was CCIW champion in the 5,000 meters in 1993 and 1995. He graduated with a degree in elementary education.
