ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Sept. 28, 2009) -- Sam Sweeney highlighted the North Central College men's tennis team's efforts this weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional hosted by Washington University, advancing all the way to the quarterfinals in singles in a field featuring 128 players.
Sweeney breezed past his first two opponents of the tournament, posting identical, 6-0, 6-0, wins over Knox College's (Ill.) Eric Hane and Wittenburg University's (Ohio) Sergio Fishkin. In the third round the junior needed three sets to retire Kenyon College's (Ohio) Paul Burgin, 6-4, 7-6, 7-4, before posting the, 6-0, 6-1, victory over Depauw University's (Ind.) Scott Sandager in the round of 16. Sweeney eventually bowed out in the quarterfinals to Wash U's John Watts, ranked fourth nationally by the ITA, falling 7-5, 6-0. The loss snapped Sweeney's 17-match win streak and was his first collegiate defeat since March 2009.
After dropping his opening round singles match,
Matt Boguslawski ripped off five straight wins, capturing the consolation bracket. Boguslawski capped off the weekend with a, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (9), victory over Jake Matthews of Kenyon in the consolation final.
Chris Bennorth rolled to victories in his opening round matches before falling, 6-2, 6-0, to Kenyon's Angus Walker in the third round. Bennorth had opened up the tournament with a, 6-4, 6-1, win over Ben Black of Prinicipia College (Ill.) before rallying to post the, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, win over Hope College's (Mich.) Brad Boelkins.
In doubles, Sweeney and his partner Boguslawski picked up a a pair of wins over team's from Hope College (Mich.) and Kenyon before falling, 8-5, in the third round to a squad from Kalamazoo College (Mich.).
No team scores were kept at the Regional featuring 26 Division III teams scattered all across the Midwest. The event was the Cardinals' lone fall competition as the team will not return to the courts until the spring season begins in February.
