WINNECONNE, Wis. (Oct. 15, 2011)-- The North Central College men's cross country squad captured the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational for the fourth straight season on Saturday, besting the 47-team field with four runners finishing among the top ten at the Lake Breeze Golf Course.
The top-ranked Cardinals blew away the 47-team field that featured 12 teams ranked in the most recent NCAA Division III coaches' poll, tallying 49 points. Fifth-ranked Washington University in Saint Louis was a distant second with 137 points followed by College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival and 29th-ranked Wheaton College (154 points). Third-ranked Calvin College (Mich.) was fourth with a team score of 156 with the host and eighth-ranked Titans rounding out the top five with a team tally of 158.
Matt Perez and Dan Kerley paced the Cardinals, finishing back-to-back in fourth and fifth places. Perez traversed the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes, seven seconds, with Kerley finishing four seconds later. Matt Brinkmeier was ninth in 25:17 while
John Crain was the fourth North Central runner in the top 10, finishing in 25:17.
Kevin Sparks was the fifth Cardinal to cross the tape, finishing 21st in 25:35.
Tim Hird (25:43) and
Yonatan Mascote (25:53) rounded out the varsity finishers, placing 24th and 37th, respectively,
North Central is idle until Saturday, Oct. 29, heading to Montrose Park in Chicago for the CCIW Championships.
