At the luncheon we'll honor Bev Thornburg as the
2012 Cleo Tanner Award recipient.
The Cleo Tanner award is presented annually to an individual or individuals that have had a positive effect on women's athletics at North Central College.
Bev Thornburg arrived at North Central College in 1970 after the retirement of Cleo Tanner. She was the driving force behind the movement to develop intercollegiate athletic opportunities for women at North Central after the launch of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, the predecessor to the NCAA, for women's sports championships. Bev started the intercollegiate volleyball program in 1971 and soon followed with basketball in 1972. In 1975, she began coaching the softball program; this in addition to already coaching the women's tennis team that Cleo had started. Because of her efforts, North Central now boasts over 250 female student-athletes participating in 11 varsity intercollegiate sports.
Later in the evening, you're invited to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day at Merner Field House and cheer for the women's basketball team
as we take on Augustana College at 5:30 p.m.
