Dec. 2, 2009 - The North Central College wrestling team experienced little resistance in its first College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin match of the season Wednesday evening, finishing with a dominant 37-3 victory over the Augustana College Vikings at Gregory Arena.
The Cardinals won nine of 10 matches and won by major decision or better in five weight classes, improving to 6-1 on the season.
Joe Norton opened the action by accepting a forfeit at 125 pounds, and
Nathan Fitzenreider followed by winning an 8-2 decision at 133 to improve to 11-1. Fitzenreider's opponent, Steve Poffenberger, was one week removed from a victory over then-No. 1-ranked Nick Nothern of Cornell College (Iowa).
Andrew Zobac reached double figures in the win column with a decision at 141, improving to 10-3 with a 10-5 win over Alberto Quiros, and
Tim Gingerich posted the lone pin of the evening at 149, sticking Tyler Dempsey with 58 seconds left in the third period.
The Vikings' Zac Holland defeated North Central's
David Oviatt, 4-0, at 157, but
Joby Bodi responded for the Cardinals with a 6-3 win over Matt Burns at 165.
Cowan Brown and
Gabe Youel followed with major-decision victories at 174 and 184, respectively. Brown notched a 14-5 win over Alex Vavra, while Youel defeated Matt Nykaza, 11-1.
Vinnie Sapienza defeated Hunter Feraco by technical fall, 18-2, at 197, and
Rodney Knowlton closed out the evening by scoring a 4-0 decision over Pat Kilroy at 285.
Youel now has 129 career victories, tying him with Darrick Snyder '00 for third place all-time at North Central. Youel needs 14 more wins to tie Adam Johnson '08 for the Cardinals' career record.
North Central travels to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Duals on Saturday. Action is set to get under way at 9 a.m.
