June 2, 2010 - The North Central College football team is featured in two recently-released national preview publications, as the Cardinals are ranked in the national NCAA Division III Preseason Top 25 in both the
Sporting News and
Lindy's Sports College Football Preview Magazines.
North Central is ranked 14th in the
Sporting News poll and 15th in the
Lindy's Sports rankings. The defending Division III national champion, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, is ranked first in both polls. The Cardinals, who went 8-2, won their fourth consecutive College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship and led all Divisions of the NCAA in scoring (49.0 points per game) in 2009, are the only CCIW team featured in the
Sporting News Top 25, while Augustana College is ranked 25th by
Lindy's Sports.
North Central's game at Wheaton College on Nov. 6 was listed as one of seven 'Games to Watch' this season by the
Sporting News, which included Wheaton and Augustana among 14 'Others to Watch' that were outside its Top 25.
Both publications also released Preseason All-America Teams, and the Cardinals were represented on both.
Kyle Antos was one of five offensive linemen to make the
Sporting News Preseason All-America list. He was one of just two CCIW players to receive such distinction, joining Elmhurst College linebacker Randy Wright.
Antos was also selected to the Preseason All-America Second Team list by
Lindy's Sports, joined by a pair of teammates in tight end
Kyle Fiedorowicz and cornerback
Derek Sulo.
Antos has started at right guard for the Cardinals for the past two seasons, earning First Team All-CCIW and First Team All-North Region honors last season. Fiedorowicz earned First Team All-CCIW and Third Team All-Region honors last season, catching 11 passes for 131 yards and six touchdowns, while Sulo, a First Team All-CCIW and Third Team All-Region honoree in 2008, returns to the lineup after suffering a season-ending injury in the second game of the 2009 campaign. The trio comprise the only CCIW representatives on the
Lindy's Sports All-Division III Teams.
North Central opens the 2010 season Sept. 4 at Cornell College (Iowa). The Cardinals' first home game is Sept. 25 against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
