Apr. 14, 2012 - The North Central College women's lacrosse team snapped a two-game losing skid Saturday, recording the program's first victory over Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference rival Trine University, 14-7, at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
The Cardinals (4-7, 2-1 MWLC) defeated Trine for the first time in four attempts, avenging a 16-15 loss in last season's first meeting between the two teams in MWLC competition.
With the score knotted at 1-1 after five minutes of play, North Central embarked on a run of 12 straight goals that extended into the second half and put the contest out of reach. The Thunder (2-5, 2-1) made a late rally, scoring six of the game's last seven goals, but were unable to threaten the hosts before time ran out.
Danielle Fiala put up four goals and two assists for North Central, while Caroline Gully finished with three goals and three assists. The pair shared the team lead in draw controls, as each had three, and Jacqui Morgan and Adelaide Dieckmeyer each turned in a game-high five ground balls. As a team, the Cardinals established a season high with eight assists.
Trine was paced by Emily Canepa, who scored three goals and collected four draw controls.
The Cardinals resume MWLC play on Sunday, hosting the College of Mount St. Joseph Lions (2-5, 2-1) at 1:00.
