Mar. 29, 2013 - The North Central College men's track and field team enjoyed a strong start to the 2013 outdoor season Thursday and Friday, winning 12 of the 20 contested events and easily topping an 11-team field in the First Chance Invitational at Buikema Track.
The Cardinals turned in a team score of 246 points, well ahead of runner-up Carthage College's score of 123.
North Central got two first-place finishes in the opening day of competition on Thursday.
John Crain led a 1-2-3-4 finish for the Cardinals in the 10,000-meter run, claiming first place in a personal-best time of 29 minutes, 55.49 seconds. He was followed across the finish line by teammates
Roger Klein (30:26.40),
Travis Morrison (30:26.43) and
Daniel Kerley (30:28.10).
Also winning on Thursday was javelin thrower
Nick Fridrich, who turned in a distance of 186 feet, 2 inches, while
Derek Nelson placed third (163'3”).
Crain also notched a first-place showing in the 1,500-meter run on Friday, clocking a time of 3:57.28, and Nelson won the 400-meter hurdles (54.89) before teaming with
Pat Foley,
Marlen Hamilton and
Dionte Hackler to win the 4x400-meter relay (3:20.70). Hackler clinched the win in the relay, narrowly outleaning Wheaton College's Derek Minkus at the finish line.
Hackler also ran on the winning 4x100 relay team, joining forces with
Robert Lott,
Dayton Henriksen and
Matt Souvannasing to turn in a time of 43.01. Souvannasing added a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.09).
Aron Sebhat won the 5,000-meter run in 15:16.92 and led a 1-2-3 North Central sweep, as
Matt Brinkmeier (15:25.20) placed second and
Tim Hird finished third (15:38.56). Other first-place finishes for the Cardinals came from
Josh Winder in the pole vault (16'4 ¾”),
Joey Michals in the 110-meter hurdles (15.88),
Zach Heerspink in the high jump (6'9”) and
Adam Weidner in the shot put (48'2”).
Other second-place efforts for North Central came from Michals in the 400-meter hurdles (54.93), Henriksen in the 200-meter dash (22.64), Souvannasing in the long jump (21'3 ¼”),
Frank Wleklinski in the pole vault (14'11”) and David Janet in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:22.54), while Hamilton added a third-place finish in the 800-meter run (1:53.15).
The Cardinals compete in the Chicagoland Outdoor Championships next Friday and Saturday at Lewis University.
