Apr. 28, 2013 - Completing an unblemished defense of its home field, the North Central College women's lacrosse team finished the regular season in style Sunday, meeting with little defense in a 16-0 shutout of Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) rival Fontbonne University at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
The Cardinals (11-4, 7-1 MWLC) became the first team in the program's history to post a perfect home record (7-0) and turned in their third shutout this season, which is a MWLC record.
North Central was off and running early, as
Claire Norfleet scored the game's first goal just 11 seconds after play began. Norfleet's goal is the second-fastest in the Cardinals' history. The hosts owned a 12-0 advantage by halftime and cruised home, permitting Fontbone (2-9, 1-7) to attempt just two shots on goal.
Danielle Fiala turned in a game-high seven goals, tying North Central's single-game record, while
Gina Fisher added three and shared the team lead in assists (2) with Norfleet. Fisher also picked up seven ground balls, while Fiala posted four draw controls. Fisher and
Katlyn Wilke each caused three turnovers.
The Cardinals are the No. 2 seed in next weekend's MWLC Tournament at Augustana College. North Central will take on No. 3 seed Carthage College (11-6) in Friday's semifinal round, beginning at 3 p.m. Live video and in-game statistics can be accessed at
