Full Release

(Apr. 9, 2013) – For the second consecutive week, North Central College junior hurler Vlasta Mangia has been named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Pitcher of the Week.

Last week, Mangia (12-0) went a perfect 4-0 in the circle in her four starts, all complete games, and surrendered just two earned runs in 29 1/3 innings pitched.  She opened the week with a two-hit shutout of Dominican University, and followed it with another strong outing in the Cardinals victory over No. 3-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.  Mangia finished the week by pitching both games of Saturday's sweep of Carroll University.  In the first game, she carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and in game two she shutout the Pioneers and yielded just three hits.

This is the third consecutive week a Cardinal pitcher has earned the award as freshman Andrea Starr was honored two weeks ago.  On the season, Mangia is a perfect 12-0, has an ERA of just 0.53, and has held opposing hitters to a .137 batting average.

With last week's performance, Mangia has cracked the top-five in multiple categories in the Cardinal record books.  She is now fourth in career victories (40), fourth in innings pitched (406.1), and tied for fourth in career shutouts (11).  She is just nine victories away from breaking the all-time record for victories, and 77.1 innings away from pitching the most innings North Central history.

North Central is back on the diamond this afternoon when they host Elmhurst College at Shanower Family Field.  First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
