Feb. 15, 2014 - Winning five events and improving its chances of qualifying for the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships in several others, the North Central College men's track and field team defended its title at the Chicagoland Indoor Championships for another year on Saturday, running away from the 18-team field at Al B. Carius Track.
The eighth-ranked Cardinals turned in a total of 159.50 points to easily outdistance second-place Lewis University's total of 99. Carthage College (90), the University of Illinois-Chicago (83.50) and the University of Chicago (45) rounded out the top five.
Highlighting the meet was the Cardinals' effort in the 3,000-meter run, which saw the oldest track record at North Central's indoor facility broken. John Crain established a personal best by nearly 20 seconds in winning the event in 8 minutes, 11.42 seconds and take 11 seconds off the track record. Teammate Troy Kelleher placed second (8:20.07), also coming in under the previous facility record set by two-time North Central national champion Kyle Brady '10. Crain's winning time is the fastest among all NCAA Division III competitors this season.
Abraham Oshipitan set a new personal best in the 200-meter dash to win in 22.24 seconds, and Mustapha Olaoye did the same to win the 400-meter dash (49.17) with Dionte Hackler following in third (49.75). Olaoye teamed with Juliano Lodi, Marlen Hamilton and Ryan Thompsen to win the distance medley relay (10:20.16) and Hackler, Oshipitan and Olaoye teamed with Derek Nelson to win the 4-by-400-meter relay in a season-best time of 3:19.38.
Femi Oyewole turned in a career-best jump of 6 feet, 9 inches in the high jump to place second, while runner-up finishes also came from Matt Muth in the mile run (4:15.11) and Kevin McMahon in the 5,000-meter run (15:14.17).
Richie Ruske placed third in the 800-meter run (1:54.63), as did Adam Lundquist in the 60-meter hurdles (8.40) and Nick Foley in the pole vault (14'1 1/4").
North Central hosts the Cardinal Classic on Friday. Competition is scheduled to get under way at 5:00 p.m.
