Feb. 21, 2014 - The North Central College women's track and field team made its final dress rehearsal for the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Indoor Championships a successful one on Friday, winning six of 14 events and placing first in the seven-team Cardinal Classic at Al B. Carius Track.
The 11th-ranked Cardinals totaled 186.50 points to head the field, while the fifth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater finished second with 141 and Loras College was a distant third with 41.
North Central made several of its first-place finishes team efforts, claiming the top two spots in four events, including a 1-2-3 sweep of the 800-meter run as Krista Cota hit the finish line first (two minutes, 17.32 seconds) followed by teammates Jacki McKown (2:18.09) in second and Nora Ferguson (2:19.78) in third.
Megan Costanzo won the mile run in 5:17.14 with Helen Majer placing second (5:23.02), while Sade Gant (7.95) and Brittny Olson (8.09) went 1-2 in the 60-meter dash and Elizabeth Composto won the pole vault (12 feet, 2 inches) as Brooke Patterson tied for second place (11'8"). Gant moved up to No. 3 on North Central's all-time list in the 60-meter dash.
Olson also won the 200-meter dash in a personal-best time of 26.39 seconds, moving into North Central's all-time indoor top 10, while Madison Renfro's winning time of 9.01 in the 60-meter hurdles was .01 off the school-record time she posted Feb. 14 in the Chicagoland Indoor Championships.
Ebony Stallworth finished second in the shot put, narrowly missing her own school record with a distance of 45'3 3/4" and Erin Fitzgerald turned in a second-place showing in the 400-meter dash (1:00.29). Stallworth also finished third in the 20-pound weight throw (49'2 1/2"), as did Miranda Rorer in the long jump (16'8 1/2") and 200-meter dash (26.81), Kelsey Kirk in the high jump (5'2 1/2") and Amanda Cortese in the 3,000-meter run (10:43.23).
The Cardinals travel to Illinois Wesleyan University on Friday and Saturday for the CCIW Championships, with events scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. both days. North Central will be seeking its third CCIW team title in four years.
