LINCOLN, Neb. (Mar. 14, 2014) - On a busy first day which saw five of its six qualifiers in action, the North Central College women's track and field team secured a pair of All-America certificates and a school record on Friday in the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
The Cardinals'
Jocelyn Redlinski made history by becoming the program's first-ever multi-event All-American, placing eighth in the pentathlon in her second appearance in the event at the national meet. She opened the day with a personal-best time of 8.88 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, the fastest time in the field, then cleared five feet, three inches in the high jump, turned in a mark of 32'2" in the shot put before posting a mark of 17'1 1/2" in the long jump to head into the final event, the 800 meters, in fifth place overall.
Redlinski closed out the competition with a season-best time of 2:33.36 in the 800 to post a total of 3,458 points, just 18 short of the school record she set Feb. 28 at the
CCIW Indoor Championships.
Elizabeth Composto added a second eighth-place finish for North Central in the pole vault, clearing 12'5 1/2." Having also claimed All-America honors in 2012 (placing eighth) and 2013 (placing fourth), making her the second three-time indoor pole vault All-American in the program's history (joining two-time indoor national champion Megan Rossi '07). North Central was also represented in the pole vault by
Brooke Patterson, who placed 12th with a clearance of 11'7 3/4".
First-time national qualifier
Madison Renfro announced her presence with authority in the preliminary heats of the 60-meter hurdles, winning her heat in a time of 8.68 seconds to lower her own school record by .14. She qualified for Saturday's final with the third-fastest time in the field. Also competing on Friday for the Cardinals was
Nora Ferguson, who placed 16th in the preliminary heats of the mile run (5:07.08).
Action resumes on Saturday morning, as
Ebony Stallworth opens competition in the shot put at 10 a.m., followed by finals of the 60-meter hurdles at 2:15.
