Cardinals Defend Home Turf, Retain CCIW Title

May 3, 2014 - Turning in eight first-place finishes across a wide variety of disciplines, the North Central College women's track and field team rolled to a second straight College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Outdoor Championship on Saturday at Jay and Dot Buikema Track.

The 17th-ranked Cardinals compiled 225.50 points to claim their third team trophy in four years and ninth championship overall. 23rd-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University finished second with 188, followed by Augustana College (145.50), 22nd-ranked Carthage College (135.50), Wheaton College (68.50), Elmhurst College (22), North Park University (17) and Millikin University (16).

North Central senior Jocelyn Redlinski was voted the CCIW's Field Athlete of the Meet after contributing 28 points to the Cardinals' effort. She won the heptathlon with a season-best total of 4,555 points, nearly 600 ahead of her nearest competitor, while also placing second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.63) and fourth in the high jump (5'3") and long jump (17'4 1/4"). The Cardinals' coaching staff was also voted the CCIW's Coaching Staff of the Year.

Two new CCIW meet records were established by North Central athletes. Lina Baker set a new record in the hammer throw, winning the event with a distance of 174'8", while Ebony Stallworth turned in a mark of 47'0 3/4" in the shot put to top the meet record and break her own school record. Madison Renfro won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.25 seconds and also teamed with Sade Gant, Brittny Olson and Miranda Rorer to place first in the 4-by-100-meter relay (48.30).

Kelsey Kirk and Jordan Flowers finished first and second, respectively, in the high jump clearing identical heights of 5'4 1/4". Megan Costanzo claimed a win in the 10,000-meter run (36:42.65), as did Nora Ferguson in the 800-meter run (2:17.07). 

Elizabeth Composto and Brooke Patterson tied for second place in the pole vault with identical heights of 11'9". Also coming in second were Ferguson in the 1,500-meter run (4:37.60), Rorer in the 100-meter dash (12.16) and Claire Taylor in the javelin throw (114'11"). Third-place showings came from Costanzo in the 5,000-meter run (18:10.35) and Rorer in the long jump (17'4 1/4").

The Cardinals host the Dr. Keeler Invitational Thursday and Friday. Competition is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday and 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
