United Soccer Coaches 2017 Division III Men's Scholar All-Central Region Teams
Dec. 11, 2017- On Friday, December 8, the United Soccer Coaches (USC) released the 2017 Division III Men's Scholar All-Central Region Teams, naming Gavin Sanchez and Jon Borzick to the third team and second team respectively.
To be nominated for this accolade a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale throughout the entirety of their career, and must start more than 50 percent of all games and be a substantial contributor to the team. The student-athlete must also be nominated by an institution that is a current USC member and be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution.
Sanchez a junior, sports management major has been named to the Scholar All-Central Region Third Team, ending the season with a 3.33 GPA.
Building off his sophomore year, Sanchez improved immensely playing in 18 games for the Cardinals and starting 15 times. Along with his increased playing time, he recorded five goals in a span of four games and tallied two assists throughout the season.
With Sanchez's success on the field and in the classroom, he is the first forward for North Central College to be recognized as a USC Scholar All-Central Region.
Borzick a senior, anthropology and classical civilizations major was the Cardinals' Captain this 2017 season. Having to lead from sidelined at the beginning of the season he created a competitive and exciting atmosphere that translated with his teammates from the bench onto the playing field.
Once cleared to play, having Borzick's soccer acumen on the field made him a quintessential piece of North Central's success. His ability to read his opponents and anticipate their next move stifled many offensive attacks before they even reached the Cardinals' backfield
Along with his performance on the field, Borzick finished the season with a 3.35 GPA, earning a spot on the USC Scholar All-Central Region Second Team. Thus, making him just the second player in men's soccer history to be named twice for the Scholar All-Central Region Teams.
With the depth of North Central College's men's soccer team this season, the Cardinals athleticism and focus on academics shall produce many more scholars for years to come.
