2017-2018 Fall Academic All-CCIW Honorees

Dec. 6, 2017 -
North Central College has released its list of 94 Academic All-College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) selections for the 2017-2018 fall season. Heading the list are North Central's Jack Swartz Academic All-Conference selections, senior football student-athlete Austin Breunig and sophomore women's cross country student-athlete Madelyn Scopp

Each CCIW institution selects one male and one female Jack Swartz Academic All-Conference Award winner each season. To be considered, student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.50 grade-point average during the term in addition to their athletic credentials. The award is named after former CCIW commissioner and Wheaton College coach and administrator Jack Swartz for his support of the CCIW and his commitment to the student-athlete.

In order to earn Academic All-CCIW honors, individuals needed to have earned a varsity letter in their sport and maintained at least a 3.30 GPA. North Central's list of 94 honorees for the past fall season is its most extensive since the inception of the award in 2005. Breunig is one of seven Cardinals to be a four-time qualifier for the award this season, joining Argeni Bailon (men's cross country), Steve Sismelich (men's cross country), Ryan O'Deen (men's soccer), Emily Gaither (women's soccer), Sarah Gaither (women's soccer) and Julie Laugel (women's volleyball).

Breunig, an athletic training major, was named the CCIW's Art Keller Offensive Player of the Year and earned First Team All-North Region honors after breaking North Central single-season records for all-purpose yards (1,686), total touchdowns (19) and points scored (114). One of 10 semifinalists for the Gagliardi Trophy, the premier individual award in NCAA Division III football, Breunig tied the CCIW all-time record for points scored in a season in conference play (102). The Cardinals won their 13th CCIW Championship and qualified for the Division III Football Championship for the 10th time.

Scopp, a biology major, was North Central's top finisher in all nine races this season, placing in the top 10 seven times. She placed seventh at the CCIW Championships to earn First Team All-Conference honors before concluding the season with a 29th-place finish at the Midwest Region Championships.
