200-Yard Backstroke (1:49.29)

Prior to the 2005-06 swimming season, Mark Schmitt '06 walked into North Central head swimming coach Sara O'Fallon's office and told her that he wanted to win the national championship. On the final day of the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday, March 18, 2006, Schmitt accomplished his goal.

The senior capped a stellar two-year stint for the Cardinals by winning the national championship in the 200 backstroke in 1:49.29.

"It was an amazing race," O'Fallon said. "It was a very deep field with a lot of very fast people. There were a number of people capable of winning that race. Mark really proved something from the start of the race until the time he touched the wall. He proved he wanted it more than anyone else."
