After finishing runner-up two consecutive years at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships,
John Weigel '96 finally captured the national title by clocking a 23:57.5 at the 1995 national meet. His second-place finish in 1993 helped North Central set the record for the lowest team score ever recorded at nationals (32 points).
Weigel also excelled in track, earning eight-time All-American recognition. He excelled in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. He was national champion in the 10,000 meters at the 1995 NCAA III Outdoor Championships as a junior with a time of 29:52.68. Weigel also took third in the 5000 meters that same meet and was second in the 5,000 meters earlier in the season at NCAA III Indoors. Weigel was also CCIW champion in the 5,000 meters in 1993 and 1995.
